The Certified Surgical Technologist exam
The applicant must be a graduate of a surgical technology program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Heath Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools in order to be eligible to sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist examination (CST).
The Certified Surgical Technologist examination includes 200 multiple-choice questions. In order to pass the examination, students must complete correctly a minimum of 118 questions. The examinations are not exactly alike because the questions are randomly drawn from a surgical technologist’s question bank, but the number of questions will remain the same for all candidates. Peri-Operative Care (105 questions)
• Pre-operative preparation (30 questions)
• Intra-operative procedures (65 questions)
• Post-operative procedures (10 questions)
Questions in the pre-operative section require knowledge of the following skills: reviewing a patient’s chart; reserving equipment for surgery; preparing an operating room; sterilizing supplies; setting up surgical equipment and preparing their skin, etc.
Questions in the intra-operative section require the following knowledge: counting and identifying instruments; understanding the methods and applications of homeostasis; passing instruments during surgery; testing and operating special equipment; observing patient status; needles and stapling devices; video recording; preparing and applying sterile dressing and applying casts; performing appropriate emergency actions, etc.
Questions on post-operative procedures include the following knowledge: evaluating patients after surgery; removing patient draping; disposing of contaminated waste and drapes; cleaning up the operating room post-surgery and preparing instruments for decontamination and sterilization.
Additional Duties (20 questions)

• Equipment sterilization and maintenance (15 questions)
Questions on additional duties include the following topics: computer technology; recognizing safety hazards, disater plan protocol, ethical and legal practices, cost containment protocol, interpersonal skills and cultural diversity. Besides, equipment maintenance and sterilization topics include: decontaminating and cleaning equipment, operating sterilization devices properly, packaging and sterilizing equipment, maintaining equipment logs and troubleshooting malfunctions and performing quality assurance.

• Microbiology (10 questions)
• Surgical pharmacology (10 questions)
The final section of the CST exam involves in basic sciences including anatomy and physiology, microbiology and surgical pharmacology. Among this, the anatomy and physiology portion will require you to demonstrate knowledge of several anatomical systems, surgical pathology and human physiology. And the microbiology sections contains questions on the following: factors that influence wound healing, stages of wound healing, classifying microorganisms, proper infection control procedures, identifying factors that lead to infection and classifying surgical wounds.
